Tarter Wins Peace Poetry Contest

Kiersten Tarter (center), a sixth-grader at Nimitz Elementary School, recently received recognition for her grand prize-winning poem Peace in the 11th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry Contest. Tarter was selected from a field of more than 640 entries. Her winning poem explores the belief in peace imbedded in all peoples. Literature Award Winners Honored

The Hawaii Center for the Book honored the 2010 Letters About Literature Award winners in a recent ceremony at the Hawaii State Library. From left are Tatiana Garzon, grade 7, University Laboratory School, Level II (grade 7-8) winner for letter to Sharon Creech, author of Replay; Sam Haneda, grade 9, Iolani, Level III (grade 9-12) honorable mention for letter to Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club); Von Dickenson Ulsa, grade 4, Fern Elementary, Level I (grade 4-6) winner for letter to Sharon Creech (Love That Dog!); Jennifer Totoki, grade 9, Iolani, Level III winner for letter to J.D. Salinger (Catcher in the Rye); and Summer Corry, grade 6, Myron B.Thompson Academy, Level I honorable mention for letter to Joan Bauer (Rules of the Road).
