A bite-sized look at food events in Honolulu.

Trio of Winemakers at Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

If meeting winemakers and tasting their new releases is your thing, then there’s never been a busier time in Honolulu. In the next few weeks, more than a dozen winemakers will be in town - many of them bringing highly allocated and acclaimed wines, and at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Restaurant Row you can catch three of them at once. The popular steak house will host Mike Westrick of Sterling Vineyards, Robert Cook of Chalone and Tom Rinaldi of Provenance March 10. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. and features five courses created by executive chef Kyle Yonashiro.

Dinner starts with Blackened Scallops on a bed of wild mixed greens served with a Sterling Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2005, and Mini Crabtini with a Creole sauce accompanied by Chalone Vineyard Chardonnay 2005. Steak Tartare pairs next with Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2005, followed by an intermezzo of sorbet with a mist of Ketel One Vodka. The entrée features a Kobe Strip (Wagyu-style m a r b l e i z e d Australian beef) served with Provence Vineyards Merlot 2004, Provence Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 and Sterling Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Reserve. Admission is limited and costs $95 per person (plus tax and g r a t u i t y ) . Reservations may be made by calling 599-8359.

Jerry Pastones of Tony Roma’s - kids eat free on Tuesdays at Waikiki and Aiea locations

Tuesdays Kids Eat Free at Tony Roma’s.

If you haven’t been to Tony Roma’s in a while, you may be surprised at some of the changes the rib restaurant has made.

“Our Aiea restaurant has a completely new look,” says general manager Jerry Pastones of the lighter woods, neutral colors, wooden chairs and intimate booths. “The look is livelier and a little more energized, and there’s a sharper, smarter feel to the restaurant.”

Not that the restaurant chain is trying to ditch its image of serving the best ribs in town, but you will find some exciting new dishes, like a spicy grilled kickin’ shrimp and a grilled chicken spinach stack (two grilled chicken breast covered with a rich sauce made from four different cheeses, artichoke hearts and creamy spinach). And if you go on Tuesdays, you can treat the kids for free (one free kid’s meal with each adult entrée ordered).

Try the shrimp and rib combo for a great value meal - two entrees of shrimp and ribs are just $36 - for a limited time only.

Food, Wine and Music on the Menu at Du Vin.

Brasserie Du Vin on Bethel Street hosts wine dinners, wine tastings and live music during the early part of each week.

Monday nights, resident sommelier Jason “Cass” Castle hosts food and wine pairings in the restaurant’s charming cask room. Executive chef Scott Nelson and Cass work well together to create pairings that are cutting edge and palate-pleasing, and dispel any lingering notion you may have had that wine dinners are boring.

Recent pairings have included: Mardi Gras seafood boil with lobster, crayfish, shrimp, Andouille sausage, potatoes and corn paired with McLaren Vale’s Camp Four Vineyard Grenache; a terrine of frog legs served with oven-roasted red and yellow tomatoes and a Tuscan Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and moi sashimi with Heger Pinot Noir from Baden, Germany.

Not your average wine dinner - and not your average wines. Tuesday evenings the Wrath of Grapes Wine Club meets (the group formerly met at Indigo), and on Wednesdays featured musicians bring a blend of contemporary and classic jazz and rhythm and blues to the French-inspired restaurant. Recent featured musicians include Johnny Helm, Sonny Silva and Howard Nett and Zig Noda.

Music starts Wednesdays at 7 p.m., but get there early to take advantage of Du Vin’s half off menu that runs from 4 to 6 p.m.
