alling all young poets: The 71st Cherry Blossom Festival, a project of the Honolulu Japanese Junior Cham-
ber of Commerce, is accepting entries for its annual Haiku Art Contest through Sept. 23.
This year, the theme is tsunagu, which, ac- cording to the organization, is the Japanese value of creating a meaningful and purpose- ful connection.
Each haiku, which is a type of short form poetry that originated from the Land of the Rising Sun, should convey the theme as well as include a two-dimensional artwork, such as a painting, drawing or photo. The contest is open to those in grades 3-12.
The winner for each of the three age cate- gories (grades 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) will receive $100 and on-stage recognition at the Cherry Blossom Festival in early 2023, and their work will be published in the event’s souve- nir book and online.
The Cherry Blossom Festival’s mission is to perpetuate Japanese culture and enrich the lives of young women of Japanese ancestry.
