God never warned Kahaluu United Methodist Church about the Oct. 15 earthquake. It hit just before the church’s 75th anniversary service began, but 175 members, new and old, showed up at 9:30 a.m. anyway in the darkened Kahaluu school cafeteria with no working microphone. The reunion was full of fellowship and food (catered and ready before the blackout). “We still enjoyed ourselves with friends we hadn’t seen for years and years and years,” says Frances Kushino, who flew in from L.A. Her uncle Stanley Serikaku, 85 from Chicago, was likely the oldest guest. A DVD of the church’s history was cancelled, but Rev. Bob Nakata said that allowed one more hour for talking: “The earthquake just added to the excitement.”
