A block party for cancer — what a concept — and it worked amazingly well for a first-time effort Feb. 3 in Kailua town. Coordinated by Danielle Scherman’s Soiree Events and underwritten by MidWeek, Castle Medical Center and others, Cool Kailua Nights attracted an estimated 6,000 people who ate, shopped, listened and partied while pouring $15,000 into Castle hospital’s cancer treatment fund. “We’ve heard great feedback from the vendors,” adds Scherman, “and we’ll definitely have more food and vendors next year.” Just as popular were the Marine Corps Band and the hula halau. The MidWeek booth earned $467 for the three sons of Moon Choi, a co-worker who died of cancer in 2006. To sign up for next year, call 782-7576.
