As the sport of boxing struggles to survive amid the international surge of popularity created by mixed martial arts - a hodgepodge of combat skills and techniques preferred over boxing by younger audiences - a Kailua gym is making it possible for promising pugilists to pursue their penchant for punching.

Fighters Unlimited Gym has relocated from the Kaneohe Marine base to Kapaa Quarry Industrial Park, and it boasts a clientele of both military and civilians ranging from schoolchildren to adults.

According to owner and head boxing coach Jack Johnson, people of all ages and experience levels are welcome.

“We do have a lot of military (members) because we are so close to the base,” said Johnson (not the musician). “We’re the only gym to serve both Kailua and Kaneohe, and we happen to be located right in the middle, so it works out good.”

In addition to giving customers a place to exercise and blow off steam, the gym also serves as a community hub where people can accomplish goals, learn new techniques and spend time doing something constructive.

“It’s done wonders for the community,” he added. “I have school-age kids, and it allows them a place to vent and learn the art of boxing. Kalaheo High School is right down the road, so for those kids who aren’t going to play on the football or basketball teams, they can come in, train, and compete for us.

“I have a whole bunch of community members who like the alternative workouts, and it’s something you can’t find anywhere else. We’ll see as time progresses how much we grow, and hopefully we become more involved with the community.”

Fighters Unlimited is open for training from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Members can choose between paying $60 per month for unlimited gym usage and training, or $6 per day. Johnson said the latter plan works well for those with busy schedules who are only free a few times a month but still want to stay in shape.

The gym also hosts monthly amateur boxing matches. The next competition begins at 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $12, and proceeds support the gym, its fighters and travel costs of competitions.
