One of the lessons Clay Chang of Uncle Clay’s Doe Fang snack shop teaches is to “open your heart, take care of one another, and believe that the world can change if everybody does that - one person at a time.”

Kuliouou-Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board member Jay Campbell not only listened to Chang’s advice, he’s taken it to heart and is spearheading two ways to help the longtime proprietor boost sales so he can stay open in light of possible changes from new management at Aina Haina Shopping Center.

The first one is to offer $5 photos with Santa from now through Dec. 24 at the shop. Pictures will be processed while you wait, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5:30 p.m. weekends.

The second plan is a “A Night of Pure Aloha” concert from 7 to 10 p.m. Jan 9 in the Aina Haina Elementary School cafeteria with Weldon Kekauoha, About 5, the NewHopeHawaii Kai dance ministry and emcee Kutmaster Spaz.

Tickets are on sale at the shop for $20 adults, $5 students. Grades K-8 with a paying adult are free.

Campbell, who has filled Bertha Leong’s board seat since she died, explained the significance of the event’s timing.

“The Aina Haina Community Association is having its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 in the cafeteria one week after the concert. Representatives of the shopping center’s owners are scheduled to show the plans for renovations at that meeting. (The concert) gives a kick start to the meeting.”

The community has been concerned about the fate of their favorite merchants at Aina Haina Shopping Center since the center’s latest owner, California-based American Commercial Equities, took over in 2007.

For more concert information, call Campbell at 373-3402.
