Kapiolani Community College’s culinary crew is set to compete at the national American Culinary Federation Student Team Competition July 11-14 in Florida, and they’re hoping that their final fundraising push will pay off.

Team Hawaii needs to raise $40,000 in travel and preparation costs, and they had $21,735 as of June 18.

A $5,000 boost came recently from Carole Kai Charities/Great Aloha Run, and Whole Foods Market Kahala will cook up support for them today (July 1) by donating 5 percent of all sales through its quarterly Community Support Day. Team Hawaii will conduct demonstrations on site and offer samples to shoppers, focusing on value and how to plan meals using leftovers. Support Day hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and demonstrations are at 11 a.m., 2 and 5 p.m. Call 738-0820.

The KCC team won the ACF’s Student Team Western Regional Championship in April and is one of four teams that will vie for the national title at the 2009 ACF convention.

Team Hawaii is comprised of student chefs Keaka Lee, Tate Nakano-Edwards, San Shoppell (team captain), Rena Suzuki, Ken Yi and Anna Hirano (team alternate/sous-chef). KCC professor Frank Leake and instructor Alan Tsuchiyama serve as team coaches and managers.

Those wanting to donate to the team may contact Linh Hoang, UH Foundation development director for KCC at 734-9570, or online at http://www.uhf.hawaii.edu/KapiolaniCC-ACFGoldTeam.
