How Green Is Your House?

Lighting systems that save thousands of dollars in electricity bills, catchment systems that save thousands of gallons of water, even waterfree urinals — Honolulu designers are at the forefront of a ‘green’ building revolution

Here are some other Honolulu green-oriented designers

Joe Ferraro

* Ferraro Choi and Associates Ltd. with founding partners Joe Ferraro and Gerald Choi, designed the Hawaii Gateway Energy Center, which is one of about 20 worldwide to achieve a LEED platinum certification, the highest industry standard.

Other projects include the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and Waipahu Intermediate School cafeteria, which this month became the state Department of Education’s first LEED-certified project.

Ferraro Choi next turns its attention to a new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association

Nancy Peacock

* Kamaaina architect and interior designer Nancy Peacock won the first American Institute of Architects’ sustainability award for a residence she designed in Manoa in 2002 which preserved a monkeypod tree by building the house around it.

The home also won AIA’s design award of excellence.

Scott Inatsuka

* The Honolulu office of engineering firm Lincolne Scott Inc., headed by president Scott Inatsuka, collaborated with Ferraro Choi on numerous projects, highlighted by the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority’s Gateway Center on the Kona coast.

Among other features, the building’s ventilation uses 100 percent fresh air and circulates cold deep-sea water through tubes to further cool the interior.
