Shooting A Film Starts With Scouting
Location, location, location - it’s as important for TV shows and films as it is in real estate. Colleen Gibbons, one of Hollywood’s top location gurus, takes MidWeek readers on a tour. Lights ... camera ... action! We’re so used to that instant action and glamour of the silver screen that it’s easy to overlook the many components that go into creating movies.

we had to build a new road or a (platform for our equipment),” Gibbons recalls. “We had that infamous mud to contend with no matter where we were. We all were kind of a mess when we’d get back to the hotel, but we were here during the holiday season so crewmembers were able to bring their families, which was a very nice perk.”
With the bulk of its outdoor work completed, the crew begins filming its interior scenes this month in North Carolina. Gibbons offers a few final words about the crew’s Hawaii experience:
“Every crewmember is aware that filming is an inconvenience to any community that we’re filming in - with the trucks and the crew - and we hope that it’s an interesting diversion. We hope that people get excited to go see what’s on the screen, and we hope that people get excited to see what goes into making the entertainment that they see, whether it’s on television or film, because a lot of people don’t have any idea of the scope of the work that goes into creating sometimes a very small scene.”
With a feature shot locally and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gibbons can rest assured of a Hawaii fan base. For young fans, Josh Hutcherson reprises his role from the original Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (the first HD 3D film ever produced) and Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical fame also is on board. Rounding off the star-studded cast are Sex and the City‘s Kristin Davis, Luis Guzman with his long resume of films, and the great Michael Caine.
