As for beauty tips, Makaawaawa says the No. 1 must-have for every girl is a bronzer, and the second is mascara.
“A bronzer is going to give you some kind of warmth and can really make you look healthy,” he advises. “And mascara is something you can’t leave home without.
“Also, a little bit of lip conditioner or lip color. I would love it if every woman out there would wear a lipstick. Lip gloss is OK too, just as long as you’re wearing something on your lips.”
Makaawaawa says the No. 1 beauty mistake he sees is applying makeup in the car.
“First of all, it’s dangerous, and second of all, the makeup will never, ever be even. You’ll put way too much on,” he explains. “Less is more is always the key, especially with mascara. I’m such a big ‘no’ to three or four layers of mascara.
“Women want heavy and thick lashes, but it doesn’t look pretty when it’s clumped together. The key is finding a brush that complements your lashes, and applying it at the base - that’s where the biggest amount should be - and then combing it through the rest of the lashes.
“Also, if you want your makeup to continue to look good throughout the day, you need to moisturize your skin, eyes and lips before you go to bed.”
Makaawaawa says despite being a performer, he was “kind of” shy and needed to build his confidence up. Winning Blush: The Search for the Next Great Makeup Artist helped to do that. And that confidence is something he hopes to pass on to others, along with a beautiful face.
“With makeup, I’m changing somebody’s outlook of themselves,” he says. “I’m taking that person who is not confident and helping them to feel confident.”
