WCC astronomy professor Joe Ciotti is on his way to Cocoa Beach, Fla., to witness the first Teacher in Space shuttle launch since 1986. Joe and teaching colleague Art Kimura were Hawaii’s nominees to take that fateful trip made by Christa McAuliffe and Ellison Onizuka in the Challenger. Also watching the 2007 Endeavor feat will be WCC’s Employment Training Center director Bernadette Howard, who was Guam’s TIS selectee. In the shuttle this time will be Christa’s backup for the 1986 flight, Barbara Morgan ... Waimanalo botanist George Staples and co-author Derral Herbst have won the 2007 Literature Award from the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries. Their monumental reference book is A Tropical Garden Flora from Bishop Museum Press (2005). Start reading it now: It tells about 2,100 plants, and it’s 900 pages long ... With roots in Waimanalo, Bia, Annette and Dee LaBorte‘s Spirit Soul band has a track on the All States All Stars CD.

A documentary on Hawaii veterans premiered July 28 at the Hale Koa. It includes footage from Kaneohe’s Pacific War Memorial, filmed July 11 with Flags of our Fathers author James Bradley. The Waikiki man’s father fought on Iwo Jima and was in the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal ... Kaneohe playwright Y York‘s The Witch of Blackbird Pond can be found in Coleman Jennings’ new anthology, Theatre for Children, Fifteen Classic Plays ...
