Windward storyteller Marguerite Peach recalls a special treat at an Armed Services YMCA dance in Honolulu during World War II. “We knew there would be a live band, as usual,” she told her Pohai Nani neighbor, Selma Kuklinsky, “but what was not usual was Ray Bolger (scarecrow in Wizard of Oz, for you youngsters) came onto the dance floor claiming me as his partner, taking me out of the arms of another.” And boy, could that scarecrow dance! ... Congratulations to Kailua High School’s Athletes of the Year Preston Nakata and Kahea Chang, and its Scholar-Athletes of the Year Davin Kamiyama and Sarah Nakaso ... Micah Maetani (mentioned here May 23), the young Kaneohe scientist in pursuit of prostate cancer cures, has won a $20,000 scholarship to University of New Mexico at the international science fair ...

Logan Keala

Kaneohe’s Logan Keala joins the Colgate University women’s volleyball team in August. The Kamehameha 2007 grad, who helped lead the Warriors to a 52-4 record in three years, is one of five in the New York college’s first recruiting class under Ryan Baker. Logan, who also lettered in basketball, used to wipe sweat off the boards at Stan Sheriff Center for the Wahine. Way to go, Cuz ... With Maunawili’s Vanita Rae Smith producing and Kailua’s Richard MacPherson directing, how can it miss? Army Community Theatre’s Once Upon a Mattress holds tryouts in July and will open ACT’s season Sept. 6 (438-4480) ...

Marissa Vela-Bailey

Marissa Vela-Bailey (Kalaheo ‘05) slipped into an audition that sister Alicia couldn’t get to and landed a dancing part in the film Bolden, about a New Orleans cornet player. It’s already filming in North Carolina ... Not only is Mitch Otani up for the top principal award nationally, the head of Kaneohe Elementary was among 11 colleagues to receive $500 as finalists for the Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award from Island Insurance Foundation ... Kailua’s Coconut Joe is the star at 8 p.m. Thursday -Saturday and June 15-16 at The Arts at Marks Garage, bringing Bob Rogers’ multimedia Bicycle Perspectives show to that downtown venue. It mixes Windward coast photos with original music (263-0373) ...

Celinda Stanton

Celinda Stanton has received a $1,000 employee scholarship from McDonald’s Restaurants, earned for being one of its top 10 student workers in Hawaii. Celinda works at the Waimanalo McDonald’s and will attend Lehigh University ... CPAC alumna Michon Suyama is home for two reasons this month - to dance in Spotlight on the Arts, the Paliku Theatre fundraiser Friday-Sunday for her former director Ron Bright (see calendar), and her own wedding to David Browwer, a fellow performer who works the Aladdin show at California Disney ... Also in the Paliku cast is Johnson Enos, whose song is being used at Disney’s Orlando park. His niece Tiffany Thurston, who was in Nashville recently to complete a CD, is also on the Paliku stage this weekend. Well, who isn’t? Actually, Michael Bright and daughter Caitlin missed a few rehearsals in May when wife Jade delivered baby boy Drew Aaron Kekuewa Bright (at 9 pounds, 4 ounces!) ...
