If ever there was a perfect fit of an individual and a company, it’s Al Tomonari and Neiman Marcus, where he’s worked for more than 30 years. Dignified sophistication define both man and firm.

In 1998, Tomonari was key in opening Neiman Marcus in Hawaii, the company’s first expansion outside the continental U.S. As vice president and general manager, Tomonari evaluates himself and Neiman Marcus Hawaii’s 13 year success by three instrumental elements.

“There are always the financial measurements of sales and profit. From a very critically organizational perspective there is the question of how the company recruits, develops and retains its people. Then there is the very important impact of the company’s contribution to the community it serves,” says Tomonari, who was featured on MidWeek‘s cover April 15, 1998.

Since it first opened in 1907, Neiman Marcus has flourished as a retail store offering storefront, high-standard clothing and accessories. The company expanded its reach with Neiman Marcus Direct, a catalog, and launched an e-commerce website in 1999. Tomonari believes strongly in the merchandise he sells and understands why it is valued.

“What makes our business so interesting is that we are able to present our customers with the very best assortments from the world’s premier designers. Then, we work with their individual needs and help them to define and express their unique individuality and style. Fashion is something that is very personal,” he adds.

For Tomonari’s exceptional attention to detail and execution, he was recently named 2011 Ho’okela Awards Retailer of the Year by Retail Merchants of Hawaii.

“The Retailer of the Year award is really a recognition of a total team effort,” he says. “I feel that it recognizes that Neiman Marcus has been a positive addition to the Hawaii retail industry and a good contributing corporate citizen, and that we have also made our individual contribution to the community.”

Established in 1985, RMH’s Retailer of the Year award honors retailers and retail businesses in Hawaii for exemplary performance in the industry and contribution to the community. As a board of directors member of Neiman Marcus since 1998, Tomonari also has been strongly involved in the nonprofit community. He currently serves on the boards of the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Air Force Civilian Advisory Council.
