Kohala - Kohala Christmas - Released: Oct. 7

Christmas in October? Well, not really, but it’s never too early for some Christmas cheer.

Grammy Award-winning members Charles Michael Brotman, Charlie Recaido and Rupert Tripp Jr. of the group Kohala have just released Kohala Christmas. The album is true to the group’s signature style - an acoustic blend of contemporary Hawaiian, Island folk and jazz. All instrumentals, the songs include classics such as What Child Is This, Home For The Holidays, The Christmas Song, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, O Come Emmanuel, Wassail Song, We Three Kings, Merry Christmas Darling and O Holy Night, as well as their own original, Waimea Christmas Bells.

The album was mixed, mastered and produced by Charles Michael Brotman, who doubles as the group’s lead guitarist and president of Palm Records. Brotman resides on the Big Island along with bandmates Recaido and Tripp. Recaido also is known for performing and recording with the group Summer. The newest member of the group, Tripp lives in Hilo and was the founder of the band Nalu.

One Right Turn - Lean On My Shoulder - Released: Oct. 7

Imua Garza, former lead singer and founding member of the Opihi Pickers, has teamed up with his wife Tiffa and her sister Connie Cruz to form the new group One Right Turn. And along with their new group comes a new album, Lean On My Shoulder, which they describe as fresh, attractive and affordable. Yes, affordable. The album retails at $9.99, which is a few bucks less than most 12-track albums.

Imua isn’t the only band member with name recognition - the two sisters come from the musical Cruz family. But besides obvious musical genetics, Tiffa and Connie come to the group with experience that goes beyond their last name. Connie is also known as half of the famous duet with her father Ernie Cruz Sr., and also is an accomplished songwriter and singer, and has appeared with the group The Girlas. Tiffa has played guitar since the age of 12 and started writing songs from an even earlier age. In 2006 she recorded an album with The Girlas. And their brothers Ernie Cruz Jr., John Cruz and Guy Cruz, all have enjoyed successful musical careers.

The much-anticipated album is styled as Island Contemporary and includes songs such as Memory, Crazy, Lean On My Shoulder, Until I Come Home, So Many Reasons, Letter, Listen Now, Forget, Played Out, Let Me Love You, High and Low and Loss Across the City.

This is completely a family project, with the three young talents self-producing the album. The group has a CD release party planned to celebrate the project Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Gordon Biersch. To find out more about this new trio, visit www.myspace.com/onerightturn.
