INDUSTRY magazine Billboard has just declared Las Vegas the hippest city in the country (us locals have known this for years). In the cover story “Las Vegas High Rollers” George Maloof (president of the Palms Casino Resort), Peter Morton (chairman, Hard Rock Hotel) and Steve Wynn (chairman, Wynn Resorts) talk about what the hotels are doing that is making Las Vegas an entertainment destination.

WHAT HAS 3,000 rooms, a 75,000-square-foot casino, 300,000 square feet of convention space and costs more than a billion dollars? The Starwood’s new W hotel in Las Vegas.

HURRICANE Katrina has displaced thousands and thousands of people -including the New Orleans Hornets - as homeless. The buzz is that they may be nesting in Las Vegas.

KIMO’S VEGAS Tip: The Tunnel connects the airport to I-15 and the only time you should let the cabbie take this route is if you’re going to the Mandalay Bay, the Luxor, the Silverton, Klondike and some residential areas. Cab drivers will say it saves time, but in reality it’ll cost you a couple of minutes and a few bucks more.

Look for the remodeling to be done by the end of 2006 and property to become more like the Mandalay Bay or MGM Grand.

THE BLUE Man Group opens Oct. 15 at the Venetian in a theater that was designed and built for their show. Look for it where the night club C2K used to be.

LA BETE in the Wynn Las Vegas will close late next month and reopen in December as “Tryst,” just in time to host the premiere Las Vegas New Year’s Eve celebration.
