EVER HEAR of the Madden curse? Each year Electronic Arts, the makers of Madden NFL (insert year hea), selects a player to grace the games cover. With this honor comes three things: mass-media exposure, hefty endorsement checks and the Madden curse. Apparently every year (except last year) the cover boy missed consecutive games because of injury. I’m no Kreskin, but doesn’t getting hurt go with the territory?

SOME PEOPLE will gamble on anything … Pinnacle Sports has a bet that the price of gas will top $3 per gallon by New Year’s Day. To date, 90 percent are betting on the price of gas hitting three bucks a gallon (that’ll be $3.79.9 in Hawaii).

THE MILLIONI$ER penny machine paid off $1 million at the Santa Fe Station. The winner, who asked not to be identified, was about $30 and 20 minutes into playing the popular slot machine when the bonus screen awarded him the top prize.

Slot machines made the casinos $7.4 billion, and table games $3.5 billion.
