THIS YEAR 6,358 people shelled out $10,000 to compete in the World Series of Poker. That’s down about 27 percent from last year’s 8,773. The decline is attributed to the loss of “dot com players” who comprised more than 50 percent of last year’s field. This is the first time in 15 years that the number of players has not increased. Also down is the first place prize money from $12 million in 2006 to $8.5 million (still not a bad payday). The final 621 players all get paid starting at $20,000, then increasing to more than $1.25 million. Not counting the main event, the WSOP has paid out $97,095,763!
This year each World Series of Poker bracelet was designed by high-end watchmaker Corum.
