Win on the road and good things happen! Following victories against Louisiana Tech and UNLV on the Mainland, the Warriors find themselves in the Top 20 in both national polls.
For those worried that Hawaii’s schedule will keep them out of a BCS game even if they’re undefeated, fret no more. With Hawaii at No. 18 in the coaches’poll, moving to No. 12 with nine more consecutive wins is as sure as an Adam Leonard tackle. The hard part will be winning the next nine games.
Downtown Las Vegas looked like it could have been set down in Kalihi last weekend.There,combining two of Hawaii’s favorite activities (UH football and going Vegas), Hawaii fans comprised nearly half of the crowd at Sam Boyd Stadium. Forget the home and home, why not just play the Rebels in Las Vegas every year? Seems to work for just about everybody.
Anybody notice June Jones wearing a Sacramento Kings cap at the end of the game? Apparently Coach Jones and the Maloof brothers (who own The Palms Hotel and Casino as well as the NBA’s Kings) hit it off, and the brothers are planning to make a significant donation to Hawaii football.
* It’s been a while since the San Francisco 49ers have been alone in first place in the NFC West. And they’re doing it with defense. If QB Alex Smith, RB Frank Gore and TE Vernon Davis can get untracked, then look out. The Niners’ defense is good enough to advance them in the playoffs,but the offense is anemic.You cannot be bested by more than 200 yards on offense and expect to win many NFL games.
* Looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie head coach Mike Tomlin has picked up where Bill Cowher left off. The Steelers have been impressive in their first two games, outscoring their opponents by 50 points. QB Ben Roethlisberger is being given more latitude,and Fast Willie Parker looks like one of the elite running backs in the league.
* How bad are the N.Y. Giants? Bad enough that Tom Coughlin will either be fired during the season or will be allowed to announce that he’s resigning at year’s end. The coach and his old school techniques have made him the least popular coach in the league.
* So much for drama in the Fed Ex Cup. Tiger Woods ran way with both the cup and the tour championship. His eight-stroke win made it two straight in the tour championship.At 31,Woods is one win away from matching Arnold Palmer’s 62 career victories.I’ve been saying not yet when people talk about Tiger being the best golfer ever,but I’ve come around.Let’s put it simply. Tiger Woods is the best golfer ever. Period.
* The N.Y. Yankees may have found the pitching to get them to the World Series. Alex Rodriguez is a runaway choice for MVP. Local product Bronson Sardinha has been called up and scored a run against the Boston Red Sox. And the Yankees still have the best leader in baseball in Derek Jeter. Should make for an exciting October.
