Aloha Pamela,

I want to applaud the person who caught my 2-year-old daughter as she was falling out of the buggy at the McDonald’s inside of Walmart in Kunia. I was ordering fries for my two daughters, ages 1 1/2 and 2 1/2, but the place was packed and I had my youngest daughter in the strapped-in part of the buggy. I asked my oldest to sit inside the buggy just for a second so I could order and pay. As I went to pay the cashier, I heard gasps from all around me and saw my daughter flipping out of the buggy. I rushed to grab her before she hit the ground, and someone helped me catch her and get her untangled from the buggy. I didn’t see who the person was or get the chance to thank them, but I owe you the biggest of mahalos as you saved my daughter from getting hurt.

Aloha Pamela,

One Sunday I stopped by Starbucks Waimalu for my morning coffee before heading off to church. There was only a slight drizzle, so in my beautiful new muumuu into Starbucks I went. As I was leaving, it started to rain heavily. My car was parked about five stalls away, and with this downpour I thought I would have to wait it out. There was a gentleman who walked out of Starbucks just before I did. He ran to his car, which was parked farther than mine, and came back with an umbrella. Although he got soaking wet getting to his car, he came back with an umbrella so that he could get me safely to my car - a total stranger with a kind heart. I never did get his name, but his kindness will always be remembered. Thank you to my knight with a shiny umbrella.

Dear Pamela,

One day I took a trip to my bank and supermarket. It should have been an uneventful day, but to my amazement my old car quit at a stop sign. Motioning cars behind me to go ahead, I struggled to locate my cell phone and AAA card. A very large, black van pulled around me and a tall, thin man asked me what was wrong. I did not have a clue. It didn’t take him long to realize I was out of gas! Shame on me, but I never had to put gas in a car. My dear husband took care of that until one year ago when he went to his heavenly reward.

The gas station was a short walking distance ahead, and this godsent gentleman told me to stay put. Several other kind young folk stopped to offer help. Two dear young men insisted on pushing the car out of the way. It seemed like ages until my unknown friend appeared. He had to make a special trip to the auto store to buy a gas can since the gas station did not have one!

As he poured in the gas, we talked and I knew God had sent a car expert. He then instructed me to pull over to the gas station, where he, to my amazement, filled the tank and checked the air in my tires. He refused any payment and told me not to tell anyone. I just cannot let this not be made known.

I assured him I would donate an equal amount to the Hawaii Foodbank through my church.

Dear Elinore, Sharon and Lisa,

Your anonymous angels deserve a standing ovation! Such gestures, big or small, serve to remind us of the goodness of people. The greatest reward you could grant them is to pass along the spirit that should be a constant part of our hearts and minds: kindness.

(If you know someone who deserves some Applause, send your letters to Pamela Young, MidWeek Applause, KITV, 801 S. King St., Honolulu, HI, 96813 or e-mail pyoung@kitv.com. Include your name, phone number and, if possible, the phone number of your “applaudee” so we can contact him or her.)
