A Crash Course On Compassion

I want to honor and thank Ms. Silva for the graceful way she role-modeled for both my daughter and me during a fender-bender.
We were at the gas pumps, she was ahead of us and my daughter (who recently earned her driver’s permit and who was behind the wheel of our car) and I were next in line for gas. Ms. Silva was pulling forward, we were behind her moving forward when our breaks failed. We rammed into the rear of her car, denting it, shaking us all up. After assessing the damage, exchanging all info and filling out the police report, she, in the most kind and dignified manner, consoled my daughter, who was distraught, and offered to give me a ride home so I could pick up my other car, since my daughter’s had to be towed. How is that for a true ambassador of aloha? My daughter learned a lot today about what one must do in an auto accident. But her biggest lessons came from this lovely woman, who showed my child that even though she was the one who got hit, she was able to show great compassion.
APPLAUSE to you, Ms. Silva. It’s people like you who remind us that we live in the best place on earth.

Rhoda Silva, a retired Board of Water Supply secretary, says your daughter’s remorse put her in the right frame of mind. “Everyone makes mistakes, and this was just one of them. I try to treat people as I would like to be treated.”

Thank you for making it possible to give recognition to special people through APPLAUSE. While I was on my way to an auto electrical shop on Queen Street, my car stalled in the middle of Ward Avenue. I was getting frantic when a friendly voice from a Servco van asked if I needed any help. He promptly called 911 and AAA. My good Samaritan was Jayson Lam. Thank goodness for kind and caring people like Jayson, who help make Honolulu a little better place to live in.

Dear Lillian,
Woody Williams, Jason’s supervisor at Servco Auto Parts, says this isn’t the first time the delivery driver has given to the community. “He organized a drive to have people donate suitcases for foster children. As a division of Servco, we try to be a giving component of our community, and Jayson is a good example of that spirit.”
Dear Pamela,
Brian Chun, a splicer at Hawaiian Telcom, changed our flat tire in the hot sun and stayed with my husband to make sure
he got air for his spare tire. He wouldn’t accept any money, saying he only hoped someone would help his wife if she needed it. This warm and generous person is a credit to the community and his employer.

Dear Virginia,
“Brian is an exceptional person, on and off the job,” says his supervisor, Hawaiian Telcom construction manager Jay Furukawa. “It doesn’t surprise us at Hawaiian Telcom to hear he helped someone in need and didn’t want any recognition or thanks. He is a hard worker who has a good heart and is always willing to help others. We’re very lucky to have Brian on our team.”
