he Hawaiian Humane Society has put out a call, asking folks to participate in its short-term foster program.
The animal shelter, based in Mō‘ili‘ili, is reporting a recent surge of dogs brought in as strays or surrendered by owners who are unable to find affordable, pet-friendly hous- ing or are no longer able to provide for the dogs’ care.
The Couch Crashers program, launched in October, lets members of the public foster a dog from 72 hours to up to two weeks. The program is a critical tool for the nonprofit to curb its shelter population while also offer- ing the following benefits:
• Lets staff provide optimal care to addi- tional animals who continue to arrive
• Reduces stress and improves well-being among dogs by giving them a reprieve from a shelter environment
• Offers a way for potential adopters to learn more about dogs they may be interest- ed in before making a lifelong commitment
• Eliminates barriers to pet fostering and
