 HPU Offers Free Economics Course Aimed At K-12 Teachers
Hawai‘i Pacific University is accepting applicants for its free “Economics for Hawai‘i Teachers” course.

Designed and taught by Gerard Dericks, director of HPU’s Center for Economic Education, the three-credit course aims to strengthen teachers’ understanding of economics and help them in- tegrate economic principles into their lesson plans.
The course began in the summer of 2022 with just five teachers enrolled. By the fall of 2022, enrollment had in- creased to 18. Dericks expects there to be close to 30 teachers in the spring 2023 course. His goal is to have more than 60 teachers in two classes each semester.
“With sustained commit- ment I believe we can see the majority of Hawai‘i high school teachers take this course and I want to make sure that every teacher has the opportunity to do so,” states Dericks. “There are tremen- dous benefits for teachers that include the opportunity to bring additional economic insights to their classrooms
