New Year’s Noise Can Lead To Missing Pets

     CLEARING THE WAY
Volunteers from ALTRES Hawai‘i spent a day clearing brush, relocating mulch and prepping gardens at Hawai‘i Nature Center in Makiki. All that hard work helped get the center ready for nearly 50 students who attended winter break camps there. PHOTO COURTESY ALTRES HAWAI‘I

he days surrounding the New Year holi- day are typically a time for celebration. Even though O‘ahu has strict fireworks
laws, it can get very noisy and scary for pets. Many pet owners already know to keep their animals indoors or in a safe enclosed area. Pets in Hawai‘i are required to be microchipped and it helps if the pet has a collar and tag with the
owner’s current contact information.
Still, mishaps happen, and if a pet goes miss- ing or someone finds a lost pet, the Hawaiian Humane Society, headquartered in Honolulu,
has some tips:
• Folks can check if someone found their mi-
crochipped pet if they registered the chip with the chip’s manufacturer or a free database like foundanimals.org.
• Call the Hawaiian Humane Society at 808- 356-2250 if a pet is missing, and file a lost pet report at hawaiianhumane.org.
• Those who find a lost pet can take it to the Hawaiian Humane Society.
For more information, follow the Ha- waiian Humane Society on social media, (@hawaiianhumane).
