Eco-themed Business Ideas Net Wins For Honolulu Schools
Students from two Hono- lulu schools won $15,000 in American Savings Bank’s annual KeikiCo Contest, which challenges pupils to submit their best business ideas. ASB provided volun- teer teachers and advisers, and video curriculum, online resources and mentorships.
“This year’s KeikiCo participants inspired us with their innovation, imagination, creativity and commitment to bettering our community.”
“We are so proud of our students for their creative and innovative work on this project. This recognition is so meaningful because our students pride themselves on being leaders and com- munity contributors, and this project and award sets the stage for the climate and sci- ence-minded endeavors that they will surely pursue and advance throughout their lives.”
In addition to the sec- ond-place win, two Priory student teams were recog- nized as KeikiCo Contest people’s choice finalists. Those teams were awarded $500 each.
Sixth-grade students from St. Andrew’s Schools and St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls placed second in the middle school category for their EcoOcean project. Students imagined a float- ing USV (unmanned surface vehicle) designed to collect spilled ocean and oil residue on the ocean’s surface.
solar/electric hybrid system that is sustainable and envi- ronmentally friendly.
Meanwhile, Ala Wai El- ementary School students placed second in the elemen- tary school division of the contest, meaning they also received $15,000 for their Go Fish Go business project, which imagines a robot fish dispensing genki balls into the Ala Wai Canal. Genki balls are made of microor- ganisms and other material that help absorb sludge and pollution in water. The fish would also have a net to pick up underwater trash.
The pollutants would go into storage tanks and leave sea life undisturbed. The USV would be powered by a

“We were excited to cre- ate a plan that would tackle ocean preservation,” states sixth-grade Priory student Carmel Kam. “This prize from ASB means we can continue to develop our idea, and possibly make it a real- ity.”
