he Hawaiʻi Kai Lions Club officially hit its 50th anniversary on April 17. With a little more than 50 members in
the Hawaiʻi Kai chapter, it is also a celebra- tion of the projects, service and support car- ried out by its members into the community.
Hawaiʻi Kai chapter president Frances Lum says the members are either current or former Hawaiʻi Kai residents. Some mem- bers, despite moving to the mainland, con- tinue to serve their community from afar.
Lum explains just how much the Lions Club members do within the community. The club often holds vision and hearing screen- ings for schools and also collects used glass- es across the island to donate to countries lacking access to optical resources. Mem- bers have also participated in sign-waving to increase traffic awareness near schools. As a part of a safe sidewalks project, Lions members identified cracks and uneven areas in sidewalks, which they were then able to patch up. Since 2017, the club has led efforts in installing rescue tubes — flotation devices
