Farm Fair Wants Pie Recipes

The Hawaii State Farm Fair is still a month away — July 11-12 at Kualoa Ranch — but the fair’s Best Local Pie Contest is accepting entry recipes now through June 20 from all ambitious amateur bakers.

Judges will announce the three finalists by July 3, based on their submitted recipes that reflect local ingredients (40 percent), taste (40 percent), aesthetic quality (10 percent) and creativity (10 percent). Last year’s winner was retired Kapolei High culinary arts teacher Cynthia Platt for her Pineapple, Apple Banana & Liliko‘i Pie with crumb topping.

At stake for the top three bakers (age 21 and older) are $500, $200 and $100 in cash prizes, plus gift cards from sponsor Big City Diner and Hawaiian Host gift baskets.

Finalists must bring two baked pies to the farm fair July 11.

Send recipes by June 20 to farmfair@hfbf.org or mail to Hawaii Farm Bureau, Best Local Pie Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 253, Kunia, HI 96759.
