WCC Chemistry Forum To Examine DNA Clues

DNA evidence and TV crime shows go hand-in-hand, but there’s a lot more to the process than just sending hair and blood samples to a lab.

Set for 1 to 2 p.m. today (Sept. 24), Windward Community College’s Community Forum in Chemistry promises to shed light on this topic with a special talk by David Haymer in Hale ‘Imiloa.

The forum, titled “DNA and Human Identification: Criminal Investigations, Victims of Mass Disaster and Related Topics,” focuses on the increased role

DNA evidence plays in criminal investigations, as well as its role in evolutionary biology and the very definition of being human.

Haymer is a cell and molecular biology professor at UH-Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine who also serves as DNA consultant for Innocence Project’s Hawaii chapter.

The free public forum is co-sponsored by the college and American Chemical Society-Hawaii section. For more information, call Letty Colmenares at 236-9120.
