Waimanalo’s Watershed Health

Given the Windward side’s frequently rainy state, watershed health is a topic of interest for Waimanalo residents, which is why Oahu Research Conservation and Development Council will host an “Explore the Waimanalo Watershed” workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The day features an interactive hike around the watershed, guest speakers from UH-Manoa’s Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences department and discussion of low-impact development techniques to manage water runoff, like rain gardens, vegetated buffers and bioswales.

Advanced registration is required for the event at oahurcd.eventbrite.com. It costs $20 for the full day, but Oahu RC&D is offering a 50-percent discount to Waimanalo residents. Lunch will be provided by Sweet Home Waimanalo.

A follow-up workshop is scheduled for Nov. 15, focusing on the installation of rain catchment systems and other water-runoff management techniques.
