Waimanalo Beach Cafe and Gallery has replaced The Sundial Cafe, and under the ownership of Bill Young, the business is thriving.
In particular, Young’s roasted chicken and gorgonzola croissant is a big hit.
“That’s the one people walk out and say, ‘Oh my goodness, that’s the best sandwich I’ve ever had,'” said Young. “I get all these over-the-top compliments that I wasn’t expecting.”
There is also an option to substitute ham for the chicken, with the same flavor-rich melted gorgonzola. Chicken and veggie hummus wraps also are a foodie favorite.
If you’re more in the mood for a beverage, Young concocts a variety of smoothies and coffees.
Young lived in New York for five years and has always wanted to open a coffee shop.
“I drank a lot of espresso and cappuccino, and thought it would be a fun thing to do,” he said.
The food is not the only compelling thing about this venue. The colorful ambiance is pleasing, as well. Young has jazz or classical music playing in the background, and customers can relax and enjoy artwork from the gallery.
Waimanalo Beach Cafe and Gallery is one block away from the beach at 41-865 Kalanianaole Hwy. It is open Friday to Monday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to the posted hours, the cafe can be reserved evenings on short notice for group meetings, parties or musical events.
