Wahiawa Garden Has Plant Care Classes

Wahiawa Botanical Garden offers a series of classes to get residents familiar with greenery in all its forms – from cooking and eating vegetables to basic plant care and fighting off diseases.

Instructor Natalie Melvin conducts a session from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 25 on “Hawaii Grown, Cooked Fresh.” The class features a cook-out with appetizers, salsa dips and salads, plus recipes to take home. Fee is $10, and reservations are required at 522-7066.

The following classes are free and are led by horticulturist Erin Purple. Reservations are required at the above phone number.

* Plant Doctor – Bring fresh leaf samples or photos of ailing plants for a diagnosis at 9 a.m. July 26.

* Irrigation Basics – Learn how to water plants with automated drip irrigation at 9 a.m. Aug. 23.

* Basic Yard Care – Learn soil types, plant choices, mulching, watering, pruning, nutrient needs and weed control at 9 a.m. Sept. 27.
