Red Light Challenge Band Wins Coveted L.A. Music Award

It seems that so many Hawaii residents are making waves on the Mainland, including Kunia’s Red Light Challenge (comprised of Sean and Kyle Luster), who took home the coveted Hot AC Artist of the Year award at the 24th annual Los Angeles Music Awards Nov. 21 at Avalon Hollywood.

“It was so cool to walk on the red carpet with all of the celebrities and the other nominated musicians from around the world,” said Kyle, 17. “The L.A. Music Awards was truly an amazing experience, and we sincerely want to thank all of our fans who helped us get this far.”

“We were honored just to be the first band from Hawaii to be nominated for an L.A. Music Award, and it’s incredible to say that we won our category,” added Sean, 22. “We couldn’t wait to come home to Hawaii and share the award with everyone and thank them for all of their support.”

The duo was present at the final award presentation, but was not able to attend the voting party, which took place in September.

In true “aloha spirit” fashion, the Luster brothers sent hula dancers Jessica Reinhardt and Kimberly Cohen to the L.A. Music Awards voting ceremony with life-size cardboard cutouts of themselves.

“The reason we couldn’t go was because I had school (obligations) that conflicted with the timing,” Kyle explained.

In his brother Sean’s playful words: “Yeah, it was all Kyle’s fault.”

Red Light Challenge had the whole voting evening planned and even sent their love from Hawaii to L.A. Music Awards executive producer Al Bowman on his birthday.

“We had the hula girls go on stage and present him with a lei,” they agreed. “We really gave him an aloha birthday.”

Red Light Challenge now is working with producer Warren Huart, who has worked with bands such as Aerosmith and The Fray, for recordings set to start in March.

The group is looking for investors to help with music video recordings and tour promotions and events. Also look forward to their Kickstarter campaign, which they say is coming soon.

Red Light Challenge has upcoming performances Jan. 3 at Anna O’Briens for 101.9 Unsigned Hawaii Live and Jan. 25 at Surfer, the Bar, at Turtle Bay Resort.
