erb Lee Jr. grew up in Kāne‘ohe less than a mile from Waikalua Loko I‘a, a centuries-old fishpond, yet he did
not know it existed until he was 40 years old. What initially began as a mission to preserve and restore a treasured Hawaiian cultural re- source for Lee became a pathway for much more.
In 1995, Lee used his thirst and passion for knowledge to form the Waikalua Fish- pond Preservation Society, a 501(c)(3) non- profit organization dedicated to restoring the 400-year-old Hawaiian fishpond.
In 2000, he partnered with the Pacific American Foundation to develop innovative and rigorous culture-based curricula utiliz- ing the Loko I‘a as a context for learning and practicing all the core academic areas and disciplines.
After initially serving as PAF’s executive director, the society was dissolved in 2014 to make way for PAF Hawai‘i Inc., which took ownership of Waikalua Loko I‘a for the first time. In 2018, Lee became the CEO and
