don’t spend enough time learning the art of penmanship, Apollina Recupero is on a mission to flip the script when it comes to cursive writing. Apollina, a student at St. Anthony School in Kailua, was selected as a 2022 Grand National Champion in the fourth-grade category for cursive writing in the 31st annual Zaner-Bloser Nation- al Handwriting Contest. Regarded as the longest-running handwriting competition in the country, the overall list of winners includes 20 students from 15 states selected from tens of thousands of entries.

“I was shocked!” exclaims Apollina. “Happy and a bit embarrassed because everyone was looking at me as it was an- nounced on the school’s intercom.”
Participating public and private schools hold their own handwriting competitions and choose a winner in each grade. School grade-level winners then compete against
