each other at the state level. State-level winners move on to the national competition, during which judges select nine grade-level grand na- tional champions and nine grade-level semifinalists.
All students write the re- quired sentence, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” because, according to the organization, it contains every letter of the alphabet. Judges then select winners based on Zaner-Bloser’s four keys to legibility: the shape, size, spacing and slant of the letters.
“I am very proud of her hard work and desire to make things neat,” says Apollina’s mother, Angela Lantang Re- cupero. “It is such a surprise that she is a Grand National Champion. Apollina is a very creative and self-motivated child. She loves art and really tries to make things look aes- thetic. She’s also quite a rule follower.”

“We know from research that handwriting offers sev- eral benefits to children that can support cognitive devel- opment and bolster academic outcomes,” says Lisa Carmo- na, president of Zaner-Bloser. “The Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest encour- ages the teaching and use of print and cursive handwriting in schools across the U.S. and recognizes students for their commitment to this lifelong skill.”
As a military family, the Recupero ‘ohana, who cur- rently reside in Kailua, have “been blessed to live on the beautiful island of O‘ahu for the past six years.”
for elementary school class- rooms, Zaner-Bloser focuses on handwriting instruction.

This is the family’s second time living in Hawai‘i.
Angela explains that St. Anthony School students sub- mit writing samples annually and the teachers select the top writers to enter in the compe- tition.
Each Grand National Champion receives an en- graved Zaner-Bloser trophy and $500 check. Their schools receive a $1,000 Zaner-Bloser product voucher and a certif- icate of achievement hand- crafted by master penman Michael Sull. Winners’ teach- ers also receive handcrafted, personalized certificates.
Says Angela of her daugh- ter: “She wants to thank Mrs. Cecilia Weaver, her sec- ond-grade teacher, who ini- tially taught her cursive. She also has nice handwriting. Thanks as well to Ms. Shaw- na-Lei Smith, her fourth- grade teacher, for submitting her work.”
“If she is allowed to com- pete again, she’d like to,” Angela says about Apollina’s future. “She also enjoys par- ticipating in the spelling bee at school and the local ‘Sight is Beautiful’ contest.”
