Kailua Girl Inspires By Never Giving Up

aumea Friel, a 7-year-old from Kailua, has been recognized as one of 11 national champions by Chil-
dren’s Miracle Network Hospitals — a first for a child from Hawai‘i.
Inspiring others with her message to “never give up,” Haumea was born with a rare birth defect that caused one leg to be shorter than the other.
She first shared her story of conquering hardship during her time as the Children’s Miracle Network champion for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children in 2020-21.
Haumea and her parents, Kainoa and Calen, accepted their national honor earlier this month in Orlando, Florida, in conjunc- tion with celebrations for Children’s Hos- pital Week. They were joined by Kapi‘ola- ni’s newest champion, Xander Cabales, and his family.
