t’s not unusual for there to be a line along Hekili Street. Given the popular eateries there and coronavirus restrictions, queues
are a part of life right now. What is unusual is to find a yellow camper inside a craft beer tasting room, serving up bagels in the middle of Kailua.
This setup, Empty Elle Bagels, is the brain- child of Tim Veling; and it’s more than an ador- able Instagram photo opp. Veling is a serious fan of bagels and he jumped at the chance to share his favorite style here in Hawai‘i.
“I’m a lifelong bagel lover and every time we travel, I find the local neighborhood bagel shop,” he states.
“When on a business trip in New Zealand, I found a Montreal-style bagel shop that I fell in love with — making me want to introduce Hawai‘i to this style of bagel.”
He soon set up shop inside of Grace in Growlers, his craft beer tap room at 143 Hekili St.
So, who’s Elle, and why is she empty?
