he DeLima family, led by patriarch Kelly Boy, has been bringing joy to Hawai‘i for years. Their music —
whether it’s one of Kapena’s hits on the radio or at one of their engaging live performances — is a part of the soundtrack to life in these islands.
Kelly Boy, renowned for his falsetto voice and ‘ukulele skills, is one of the founding members of Kapena, which forever cemented Jawaiian in Hawai‘i’s musical landscape. To- day, he and his children Kalena and Kapena, and Lilo Tuala continue the band’s legacy.
Kalena is a classically trained pianist and vocalist; Kapena is the band’s drummer and musical director, and Lilo is an accomplished bassist — she’s one of the few regularly gig- ging female bassists in the state.
It should come as no surprise that, when live performances were suspended last year, the family gracefully pivoted to a digital for- mat. Not only did they offer mini concerts that lifted spirits, but they also gave music lessons.
