As Pua became more involved, she began coaching some of the teens and women. Just before her grandmother died in 2013, the canoe club received its nonprofit status, and she took on the kuleana (responsibility) of head coach.
“Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling is a unique way for people to learn more about the Hawaiian culture, the area and each other,” Serrao says. “Paddling is such a unique sport because it gives opportunities for the entire family to participate in the sport and allows multi-generational bonding. I believe that the values and focus EPOCC shares is beneficial for our community and plays an important role in nurturing the growth of our keiki.”
