Following a six-year break from the Queen Li- li‘uokalani Canoe Races in Kailua-Kona, traditionally held over Labor Day week- end, the club sent a crew of youngsters to participate in this year’s 5-mile teen race. The crew of three girls and three boys committed to ex- tra training during the sum- mer in addition to regular regatta practices and races, according to Serrao. Some weekend training sessions consisted of 6 a.m. beach workouts and some 5 a.m. runs.
The victorious crew in- cluded Kamalei Hew Len, Logan Chong, Chanceton Omalza, Teisha Sagapolute- le, Destiny Evans and Ethan Chong.
“During training we re- mind them that when they are in the wa‘a, it is all them. Based on their train- ing and the values we teach at EPOCC, it is their time to make choices, commu- nicate and motivate for the betterment of the whole. As far as pulling together in the race to medal, only the crew knows.”
