ere’s some good news from the state Department of Education: All students at Hawaiʻi’s 257 public
schools — including those on the Westside — will receive free breakfast and lunch for the 2021-22 school year. It’s all thanks to a nationwide waiver from the U.S. Depart- ment of Agriculture, which aims to limit the spread of COVID-19 by eliminating pay- ment transactions.
“This has been a challenging time for our ʻohana, and I am proud to continue our safe- ty net support through actions that improve food security for our students while provid- ing economic relief for our families,” states former superintendent Christina Kishimoto.
Though no action is required for the free food, DOE encourages parents to still submit their Free and Reduced Price Lunch Meal Benefits applications online at ezmealapp. com or by using the EZMealApp. The infor- mation gathered impacts eligibility for other programs, including bus transportation.
