AUGUST 11, 2021
Aloha, surfers and beachgoers! Howzit? Can you believe we’re in the final month of summer? It cer- tainly looks and feels like summer; tons of sun and trades, along with choppy wind swells and clean off- shore south swells topping the wave height list. The North Shore surf machine will likely start to kick into gear in September, but for now it’s mostly diving, fish- ing, sailing and paddling ... and lounging on the beach.

O‘ahu’s Carissa Moore Embodies The Aloha Spirit
On the surf news front, it’s really still all about the
GQ, droppin’ in 4 U!
Olympics and, of course, Hawaiʻi’s golden surfer girl Carissa Moore. She’s got four world titles (her first at age 18 — the youngest ever). The Native Hawaiian carried the aloha spirit all the way to the top Olympic podium July 25. This made her surfing’s first-ever gold medalist for women (Bra- zil’s Italo Ferreira actually won the first gold surfing medal since the men’s final heat went first. But it doesn’t matter. What matters is that surfing became a celebrated and legit Olympic sport; this gave our “sport of kings”
the attention it has always deserved. It had to happen sooner or later and right now is a great time to be alive and be a surfer.)
working Kahanamoku was. Does this remind you of anyone? Indeed, Moore has shared many times over her desire to live aloha like Kah- anamoku. She does. Though, of course, she’s too humble
ter than most on the world championship tour, plus she knows how to get barreled better than most, too. The momentum is clearly on her side as she’s the reigning world champ — from pre- COVID — and, of course, she’s the first-ever Olympic surf champion. Good luck, competitors.
Hōʻailona is a word that means someone is being watched over by their an- cestors (kūpuna). In Moore’s case it sure feels like the great modern-day father of surfing: Duke Kahanamoku. He was always humble and filled with aloha, reaching out to others to enrich their lives and to share Hawaiʻi’s many blessings of nature. It is easy to overlook how talented, focused and hard
to “claim” the honor.
Moore is not getting much
down time these days as anyone could imagine. In fact, she’ll be in Mexico by the time you read this for the Corona Open presented by Quiksilver, Aug. 10-19. The spot is called Barra De la Cruz. It’s one of the best “point breaks” on the planet when it’s working, so pray
