haircut is more than just an image — it has the power to boost an individu- al’s self-esteem and confidence.
This mindset is embodied by Kikowa “Koa” Tudela, founder and owner of The Collective Barbershop, who explains, “When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good you do well.”
Tudela is originally from the island of Saipan, located in the Northern Marianas Is- lands, and grew up in Hawai‘i. As one of eight siblings, Tudela notes that family is extremely important to him, and explains that the driving force behind getting into the barbering industry was primarily a desire “to be able to bless my siblings and the people around me.”
“Hawai‘i is a melting pot for the hair in- dustry,” Tudela says. “At The Collective, we believe in creating a more inclusive and sup- portive barbering community. We ‘aloha’ ev- erybody and stand for working together and respecting others for their style of our craft. That being said, we don’t see competition, we see opportunity.”
