acific Buddhist Academy teach- er Verena Mellein spent a week in the nation’s capital earlier this year,
visiting the Lincoln Memorial, the National Portrait Gallery and the State Department of Diplomacy. She even met President Joe Biden’s dog, Commander.
She wasn’t there as a tourist, though. She was participating in the White House Histo- ry Teacher Institute, a professional develop- ment program that gives educators a deeper understanding of America’s past. The goal is to have them pass on what they learn to their students and colleagues.
Mellein, who is from Germany and at PBA through Teach USA’s Cultural Visa program, was the first teacher from Hawai‘i to attend the institute but she believes oth- er educators from the islands should apply, too. It’s open to kindergarten through grade 12 instructors, not just history teachers.
Mellein received a $750 travel stipend and free lodging and daily meals at Sofitel in Lafayette Square. The White House His-
