he concept of Lana Lane Studios came to Jasper Wong when he no- ticed many local artists didn’t have a
dedicated space for their work — they were painting, sketching, building and creating out of crammed garages, tiny lanāi and living rooms chaotic with kids and their toys.
In 2012, Wong — the founder and lead di- rector of POW! WOW!, a global nonprofit that organizes art lectures and public exhibi- tions, including the annual mural painting in Kaka‘ako — set out to create a studio space for those artists.
He reached out to Kamehameha Schools, property owner of SALT at Our Kaka‘ako and a POW! WOW! Hawai‘i partner. They told him about an unoccupied warehouse in the area that was housing concrete and cement.
“It was a really raw space with nothing in there and they were able to provide us with a cheaper rent,” says Wong. “I had just had my firstborn daughter so on top of being a dad, I wasn’t sure if I could handle the build-out. Luckily, Jeff Gress, who is also one of my
