olling out its first bit of fabric in 1982, The Calico Cat in Kaimukī is celebrating its 40th year in business.
The shop opened with a mission to be a go-to spot for quality sewing supplies. But the 700-square-foot store at 1223 Koko Head Ave. has grown to be much more than that, as it has woven together a tight-knit commu- nity of crafters.
“At times, it seems that we have a get to- gether, as customers enjoy conversations and sharing with us as well as other customers,” states The Calico Cat owner Carol Kuniy- oshi. “It seems like a gathering place as new friendships also have developed.”
Customers-turned-friends can strengthen bonds during The Calico Cat’s sewing classes, which are open to novice and experienced sewers.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the classes are put on pause for now. However, Kuniyoshi states one of her goals still is to “inspire my customers in developing their creativity.”
