Improvements coming to Aiea baseball fields

Dear Editor,

Athletes from Aiea and surrounding neighborhoods will soon enjoy an early Christmas gift. Baseball diamonds at Annex, Newtown and Waimalu are receiving a much-needed upgrade.

The Aiea Little League board of directors recently voted to invest resources to upgrade these three diamonds.

The fields have been plagued by an uneven playing surface and worn bases. These playing conditions make awkward bounces and dangerous falls possible. Furthermore, the uneven surfaces create mud holes after the field is watered or a heavy rain, and these mud holes can take several days to dry out.

Improvements on the way include: new bases, rebuilding of the pitching mounds, filling holes, leveling the buildup around the infield and manicuring the grass.

“First and foremost, these upgrades will create safer playing conditions for our athletes,” said Brian Sekiguchi, Aiea Little League vice president. “We also hope the improvements will add value to the families in Aiea and its neighbors.”

Work has started and is expected to be completed by the start of the Aiea Little League spring season at the end of the month.
