Painting like Michelangelo or Rembrandt isn’t just a pipe dream for would-be artists – Windward Community College’s Atelier Hawaii workshop May 27-July 3 will make it reality for 24 students.

Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each weekday at WCC’s Hale Palanakila Art Studios.

Students looking for college credit will pay $1,488 for the six-week, six-credit course ($2,100 for non-residents). Noncredit attendees pay $1,200.

Taught by WCC art instructor Norman Graffam, the workshop focuses on classical realism, a 20th-century art movement inspired by 17th-century art. The course emphasizes portraiture and the human figure, and students will learn sight-size and observational drawing skills, as well as oil painting techniques. Students also will learn how to “cook” paints, stretch and prep canvases, and get out of the classroom to visit museums and attend lectures.

Space is limited, so call Graffam at 236-9148 to get on the registration list. Non-credit students must submit health clearance and a portfolio of their observational drawing work as a prerequisite.
