Waimea To Return Hula To Makahiki

Waimea Valley presents its third annual Makahiki Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday, offering a day full of hula, culture, music, traditional games, workshops and demonstrations — but mostly hula.

The park is reviving the popular Ke Alohi Hula Competition, which has both wahine and kane vying for a solo title of excellence in kahiko dancing, Ke ‘Alohi O Waimea (Waimea’s brilliant hula dancer). At least 10 dancers will compete this year, after the event’s two-decade absence.

The festival takes place in the amphitheater and upper meadow at the park. Admission is $10 and $5.
