Tourney Funds UHWO Grant

Thanks to the Underwriters Association of Hawaii, University of Hawaii-West Oahu’s (UHWO) Risk Management and Insurance certificate program now has an additional $10,000 to fund scholarships and program development. UAH, a nonprofit that aims to expand education, fosters fellowship and interaction among insurance professionals, presented UHWO with the donation at its annual charitable golf tournament July 26 at Hoakalei Country Club.

“This generous donation from the Underwriters Association of Hawaii allows us to offer additional scholarship support to students pursuing the Risk Management and Insurance certificate program at UH-West Oahu,” said UHWO chancellor Rockne Freitas. “It’s a win-win situation, because our graduates go on to careers in the insurance industry, where trained professionals are in high demand here and across the nation.”

UHWO’s Risk Management and Insurance certificate program provides training for risk management, personal and commercial insurance professionals and license examination preparation. UHWO is the only university in the state to offer the certificate.

“I am so pleased and proud of our local insurance industry with their generosity helping to support this program at UHWO,” said Ron McQuaid, president of the Hawaii Independent Insurance Agents Association (HIIA). “I can’t thank our fellow industry association, UAH, enough for their strong support and such generous donation. Being the first of its kind and the only insurance certificate curriculum in Hawaii, this support will help ensure the growth of the program.”
